Don't just enter SIH.
Walk in ready to win it.
Smart India Hackathon is where students solve real problems posted by ministries, PSUs and companies. Winning isn't luck — it's a process. Here's exactly how strong teams do it, step by step.
The process
How winning teams actually work
Do these in order. Then loop back and do them again, sharper each time.
Find a great problem
Not the easiest one — the one your team genuinely cares about and can build. Use your matches to shortlist, then read the full problem statement carefully, twice.
Build a vision for it
Before any code, agree on what winning looks like for this problem. What does the solution do, for whom, and why is it better than what exists today?
Do your homework — search the internet well
Find real data, existing solutions, research papers, and government datasets. Know how this problem is solved today so you can clearly show where the gap is.
Connect with people around the problem
Talk to people who actually face it — a farmer, a shopkeeper, an officer, a doctor. Reach out to people in the domain and around the event. Real conversations beat assumptions every time.
Ask the problem owners
Each problem statement has an owner — a ministry, PSU or company. If you have doubts, write to them. Their feedback tells you exactly what the judges will care about.
Build the solution
Solve the core problem first. Get one thing genuinely working before adding extra features. A working prototype beats a beautiful deck every single time.
Iterate — again and again
Take the feedback, sharpen the idea, rebuild the weak parts, and refine your pitch. The teams that iterate the most are the teams that win.
Team of 6
Build a team with aligned skills
The best teams aren't six coders. They're a balanced squad — each person owns a part of winning. (At least one member must be a woman — it's an SIH rule.)
Diversity & balance
At least one female member. Multidisciplinary teams — across branches and years — think wider and impress more.
Presentation & networking
Someone who can pitch to judges, tell the story, and reach out to real users and problem owners.
Research
People who dig up data, study existing solutions, and find the gap your idea will fill.
Builders
People whose skills align with the problem and can actually build the working solution.
Product & MVP
People who can turn it into a real MVP and think about how to partner or deploy it.
The mindset
What impresses the juries
Read it deeply
Understand the problem statement fully before you design anything. The core need is hidden in the details.
Core problem first
Nail the central problem, then layer extra features on top. Don't build ten half-features.
Think differently
Solve it in a way no other team would. A genuinely original angle is what makes a jury lean in.
Defend your choices
Be ready to explain why — every design decision, backed by your homework and real users.
The rewards
What winning gets you
This is real support to turn your idea into a deployed product.
Institutional funding
Winners of each problem statement get funds from the institution to build out the product.
Deployment funding
SIH winners get funds to set up their product at the problem owner's actual locations.
Cash prize
A cash award from SIH for winning teams.
Travel & stay covered
Your travel and accommodation for the event are taken care of.
Make it workable
